# Learnosaur reusable game content

These JSON files contain the same original practice content that the Learnosaur games import. They are static downloads: no account, API, or connection to a classroom system is needed.

## Choose a file

- Each game has a named bank, such as `affix-builder.json` or `rhyme-time.json`.
- `learnosaur-all.json` contains all 30 banks under its `datasets` array.
- The website offers a one-record preview and links to the matching game.

## Shared structure

Every game bank has this envelope:

```json
{
    "schemaVersion": 1,
    "id": "rhyme-time",
    "title": "Rhyme Time",
    "category": "Phonics",
    "gradeRange": { "min": 0, "max": 2 },
    "locale": "en-US",
    "description": "A bank of rhyming word pairs.",
    "items": [{ "words": ["cat", "hat"], "rime": "at" }]
}
```

Grade `0` means kindergarten. Ranges describe suggested starting points, rather than a standards alignment or an assessment of a learner. Examples use general US English; local pronunciation and vocabulary can vary.

## Understand the items

Item fields vary by skill so they stay useful:

- Vocabulary: clues, answers, choices, contextual passages, affixes, synonym pairs, or Greek and Latin word roots.
- Phonics: rhyming pairs, word families, syllable counts and splits, vowel labels, or sounds to blend.
- Grammar: sentence context, part-of-speech labels, punctuation purpose, word order, capitalization indices, tense, or sentence repairs.
- Spelling: correct words, distractors, hints, plural rules, letter indices, or homophones in sentence context.
- Writing: story stages, coherent poems, sentence choices, vivid words, or events in the correct order.

Story Builder also includes a `template` string with named placeholders such as `{hero}` and `{setting}`. Match those placeholders to the lowercase stage labels and insert one chosen option per stage to reproduce a complete story.

The site counts top-level item records. One family record can hold several words; a poem record holds six stanzas. Indices such as `missingIndex`, `silent`, and entries in `caps` are zero-based. Answer fields and ordered events are intended for teacher planning; select student-facing examples before making a handout.

## Focused practice and newer banks

Reading Trail, Spell Check, and Spell Sprint include a `skill` tag and an `Easy`, `Medium`, or `Hard` difficulty on every item. The games use these fields to choose a focused set before play; session lengths stay short. Tags describe these practice items and are not formal measures of reading ability.

Reading Trail includes `genre` (`Fiction` or `Nonfiction`), a title, passage, question, choices, answer, explanation, and an exact `evidence` excerpt from the passage. Its skills include detail, sequence, cause, inference, main idea, and text evidence. Grammar Slam includes seven `pos` labels: Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Pronoun, Preposition, and Conjunction.

The three newer banks also include skill and difficulty tags:

- `sentence-repair.json`: an original `sentence`, repair `instruction`, complete answer choices, `answer`, and `explanation` for agreement, fragments, and run-ons.
- `root-explorer.json`: a `word`, its `root` and Greek/Latin `origin`, a `question`, answer choices, `answer`, and `explanation`. Root meanings were checked against [NSW Department of Education’s Teaching Word Parts guide, Appendix 2](https://cer.schools.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/doe/sws/schools/c/cer/localcontent/teaching_word_partsfinalv2.pdf).
- `homophone-harbor.json`: a sentence with one `___` blank, answer choices, `answer`, and a meaning-based `explanation`.

The printable worksheet maker supports 12 banks. Its links record a bank, question count, and shuffle seed, with no learner details or responses. Reopening a link reproduces its question and answer-choice order while the canonical bank remains unchanged; a later content update can change an older set.

## Classroom ideas

1. Choose a grade range and preview a bank.
2. Download the JSON and open it in a text editor or a project that reads JSON.
3. Turn a few items into matching cards, spelling practice, a partner discussion, or a writing prompt.
4. Copy the file to adapt its examples. Preserve its field names if you want compatible tooling.
5. Preview answers, distractors, and pronunciations for your learners before using an adaptation.

The games draw short sessions from larger banks, so a download contains more examples than one play session. Word Relay and Grammar Slam offer untimed practice and an optional timed challenge.

## Maintaining the site

The canonical banks live in `public/datasets/{game-slug}.json`. Edit those files, then run `pnpm run content:build` to validate them and regenerate the website manifest and complete bundle. `pnpm run content:check` checks content integrity and that generated files are current. Development and production-build scripts regenerate the collection automatically.
